Until i can get myself a strobe, is it worth taking a dive light (maybe adding a diffuser) to help light a scene?
probably not.
you will likely get hot spots and very un-even lighting. Every now and then my divebuddy messes up an ambient light shot by shining her dive light at my fish. I get a central hot spot along with a light ring several feet out. Different lights give different patterns. A dive light is also not really bright enough compared to a strobe. Adding a diffuser to combat the hot spots reduces the light even further.

There is no free lunch. If this actually worked, everyone would do it.

Dive lights can be used for video. Most are not powerfull enough to give enough light for the camera to use a shutter speed sufficient to freeze motion.

good point! I keep forgetting about video since i don't do that any more....too much time required in post processing...

all of my dive lights are old bulbs with extreme central hot spots which makes them unsuitable for video as well.

let us know how the dive light works for video.

thks for the advice. Was just thinking if shooting natural light/non-strobe was my only option till i can pickup an external, a video light would at least help light the area even if only marginally to increase the shutter speed a tad, so i could continue to shoot a little deeper.. fully understand a video light will never replace a strobe for intensity, may give it a try as will be out this weekend anyway.
