Hello Docs! I had someone a few days ago that wanted to go diving and has recently been diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma. I know basically what it is now after reading some things online. I would like to know as much information as I can about the effect this disease has on the body related to diving. Any and as much information as I can get for future reference would be great. I checked the DAN website like always but it's such a rare disease that I guess they haven't had many inquiries about it. Thanks in advance!

A type of cancer almost exclusively related to asbestos exposure. Generally rapidly proressive and rarely curable. Associated with restrictive lung disease by stiff pleura and fluid(pleural effusion) that will compromise lung funtion and gas exchange. Initially invades locally into chest wall, and chest structures such as lungs, esophagus and heart, later hematogenous and/or lymphatic spread. I would not expect this person to be up to the rigors of diving.

With that prognosis why NOT go diving? Maybe you'll get to enjoy the last moments of life doung something as great as diving.
