we might need to refocus a tad here. The $800 fins are basiclly that expensive due to the Tan Delta material combined with the design of the fin. Not all FF fins are that expensive. That is just one specific material of one specific model.

And any value if it is perceived to be worth an amount is worth exactly that amount. Now if it is worth that amount to another person that is a different matter. This one specific fin is not for the masses, it is for those who are able and willing to pay that price. If they are, then it is certainly worth it for them. If someone isn't willing to pay the price, then its not worth it.

Is it possible that these fins are so much more efficient, so much more easy to use that they are worth 3 to 5 times more than other fins. Of course it is possible. Heck it makes them interesting to try, it kind of is an incentive to see if they could be that much better.

Oh and the comparision of the fins to watches makes sense to me. Since the $800 FF use a special material which is much harder to use (from my understanding) then it is a good comparision to the gold and silver used in the rolex.

One of the fun things, to me, about scuba, aside from the actual diving part, is the equipment. I like equipment, always have. There is a wide range of things that work great in the scuba world, and everyone has different likes and dislikes, thankfully. It makes coming to things like SB more fun since we get to look at all the cool shiney new stuff. Besides this thread would be really boring if there wasn't a 6 billion dollar FF to talk about :) (I am guessing thats what the Pentagon pays for them)

Pete, have you tried diving with only one fin? I'm serious. If your ankle isn't strong enough right now, don't strain it. Build your strength back up in it slowly before putting demands on it. It is quite easy to swim in a straight line with only one fin. I do it quite often when practicing my skills, but what made me think about it for you were my dives yesterday. One of our club members has an amputation at the left knee. When diving, he uses one fin and gets around quite well. I watched him, he was one of the stronger divers out there yesterday.
Let's see a sustainable frog kick with only one foot! :D You know I stick to the bottom like glue, and I might have to give that up! We'll see.

hey FinDr,

anyone ever tell you that you look just like Dr. Steve Brule? (on tim and eric)

lol he's awesome, his real name is John C. Riley...

There are 3 models using Tan Delta. I tried finding out what Tan Delta is.
According to the web site:
Tan Delta Fin Blade: A special Polyurethane, formulated to have the highest rebound, or snap.

I know what silver and gold are. I do not know what this "special" polyurethane is. For all I know, it could just be a shinier version of the default. Then again, it could be as the manufacturer claims and be a special blend that makes fins snappier.

Here is the difference in their advertisement's:
Polyurethane, stiffness 87 / rebound 78
Or: Tan Delta Polyurethane, stiffness 90 / rebound 100

I want to believe, I just require proper evidence. I guess revealing the technical details of tan delta vs their normal polyurethane would entail giving away a competitive advantage. Perhaps they could enlighten on how they test stiffness and rebound?

haha it's so funny how the only people supporting force fins all (but one) have less than like 50 posts...

;-)

HA HA! It's so funny how the only people bashing Force Fins (with a few exceptions) have less than, like, 100 dives....

rolex is a status symbol, they make beautiful watches... Don't be jealous...

oh, I'm not jealous. I have the watch I've always wanted. passed up on the Rolex to get it. :D this is completely off topic, I was just saying that even though they are constantly being compared to as the standard of high quality luxury items, Rolex are not the be all and end all of high end watches. far from it, just the most visible. heck, sit in first class on any typical business commuter flight, you will see at least 50% of the male passengers wearing the Rolex Submariner typically black on steel. its like part of the sales guy uniform, along with shiny shoes, sparkly cuff links, and a 3 martini buzz :rofl3:

actually (assuming these fins do NOT perform so fantastically well) the comparison to a Rolex might be appropriate. high price, mid performance, high visibility status product.

if they perform well enough to really support their sales price.....hmmmm who knows....
