Hi,
I'm assembling a bp/w setup fpr my girlfriend. The harness will be made out of 2" continous webing. This rig will (at least for the time being) be used for warm water diving and I'm estimating her weight requirment to be nomore then 10 lbs. She would like to have the weight on the harness (meaning no weightbelt). Can you guys recommend some of the solutions you found. I would preffer no to buy a set of pockets for $100 if there is a cheaper but effective alternative. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Stas

Are you sure she will need 10 pounds? Is it an aluminum or steel plate? I dive an aluminum plate, and need only a couple of pounds, and only if in salt water. I would recommend at least giving it a try without weights before commiting to buy weight pockets. If you have to go with them, I would advocate getting weight put onto the plate. Im sure some people with exact places to get these weights will be along shortly. Some people will recommend XS Scuba pockets on the harness. I used these for probably about 30 dives, but had some problems with them myseteriously dumping weight, so I cant reccomend them. Hope this helps some!

I use these XS Scuba Weight Pockets. You can use them on any 2 inch webbing. I put mine on the tank bands, but you can put them anywhere on the harness.

ooops...too slow....lol. These are the same that Pete recommended above.

spectrum:
Is the intention for this weight to be ditchable?

I have seen the XScuba velcro pockets used with a lanyard added to the weights for easier removal.

I have used them on my belt for almost 100 dives with nothing close to an incident.

Pete.

I also use these. One on each side of the waist strap, next to the plate, when not using a can light. You also need an extra keeper to lock the pocket in place on the right. On the left I use the left hip D-ring/keeper to keep the pocket in place. They'll hold 5# each.

I used to have the pockets inverted for easy emergency dumping during ascent, but I changed my mind about that. In particular, I was afraid they might fall out on shore/boat or on the surface if ever removing them to hand to the boat crew. Having the pockets face up just seems more natural and easier for me.

Its an aluminum plate. She will be diving in saltwater. I believe she will need some weight, thou probably less then 10#. I was looking at the xs scuba pockets but from the picture it cant tell how secure they are. How is the weight kept in the puch and what is the release mechanism?

They are held shut with Velcro. I would estimate that the Velcro patch is 1/3 - 1/2 the size of the front of the pouch. There is a lot of holding power there, especially in shear mode.

There is no release per se, they are not sold as a quick release system. To open them you grab the corner of the flap and peel it open. To make a bonafide quick release will require custom work.

If I was to add pockets to a BP for ditchable weight, Here's what I would use above all the others:

Apeks weight pockets

These are so good I have no idea why more folks don't use them instead of the self-ditching velcro pockets like the Dive Rites.

I have seen these on a BP (a guy I dive with has them) and they are very nice. My jacket BC is a SeaQuest, and uses the exact same clip system, and they are absolutely solid when you are wearing them, and easy to ditch when you want to. The other advantage is they use the standard SeaQuest weight pocket, that's available just about everywhere.

Our LDS is a Apeks dealer and it's just the shipping time to get them.

All the best, James

Hi. I lost one of my dumpable DiveRite weight pouches and didn't want to pay over $100 for a new set, so I recently went with the XS scuba and Zeagle weight pouches (both under $15), which can be threaded through 2" belt. I think they may have been meant for attaching to tank straps as they are technically non-dumpable. However they both have velcro flaps that you can quickly open and reach in to toss your weights. The Zeagle is deeper so it may be difficult to reach if the weight is at the bottom of the pouch. The XS scuba pouch takes 4 pounds of lead, the Zeagle (see link below) takes 6 pounds. I use them in warm water as they don't carry a lot of lead. For cold water, I use a 12 pound weight belt in addition to these.

The XS scuba pouch takes 4 pounds of lead, the Zeagle (link below) takes 6 pounds.

The LP description says 5# not 4# for XS scuba pockets, and I've put up to about 6# in one without problems though it was pretty tight.

The release mechanism is to open the pocket and take out the weight. But you can also invert the pockets on your waist strap so then you just have to pull them open while vertical (head up) and weight should fall out automatically.
