I saw this last week at Breakwater. The "tube" was about an inch in diameter and maybe 10 to 15 feet long. I am new diving here, but my buddy did not know what it was - he said he had never seen it before. It was in 15 feet of water or so. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Better pictures to come - too much compression in these.

Nice photos Joel. That is a jellyfish with a semi-nasty sting. There was another thread recently on that guy on another list. I'll see if I can find the exact ID and post it here.

It's a siphonophore. Praya, I believe.

Here are a couple shots I took of one. It seemed to be missing its "bell".

Thanks Mark and Mike! Just for completeness, here are the less distorted versions of the photos.

Ah, thanks Mike. I forgot it was you and Josh. The only think I remembered was it was the weekend of the photo shootout. We saw one out at Beto's Reef that day too and my buddy got a bit of a sting from it...

By the way, Mike, AWESOME photos. Makes me embarrassed that I posted mine

Thanks Joel. Your photos aren't bad at all. At least you almost got the whole praya :) I was stuck with my 100 mm macro lens so I couldn't get the "full effect" of the twisting praya. I didn't know it had a nasty sting and there were times that my face was pretty close to it!

Very cool! I saw two of these, about seven feet long apiece, out around 60' at the Metridium Fields. It was strange, because I'd just read this thread! At first, thought they were anchor lines.
There seem to be a lot of them around now. I saw a small segment (3 feet or so) on the way back from Metridium yesterday, and Scott from MBDC saw a full one about (15 to 20 feet) on his tour.
