We usually stay at Buddies but some friends want to go to the Plaza Resort now that it is all inclusive. Is this comparable to Buddies from a diviing, amenities, value standpoint? How is the food?

Being that you have stayed at Buddy dive you know how easy it is to access the house reef and get to the boats there. Loading up you truck that is included in you stay at Buddy dive is also so easy.
At Plaza it is a trek to get to their house reef. So much that I did not do 1 shore dive off their house reef. The walk from our room was not a 30 second stroll but more like 5-7 minute trek.
Food is ok, but why eat there all the time, and not get to know the island, when there are so many other options that are easy and safe to get to?
At Plaza renting a truck is also most likely an optional additional cost where at Buddy Dive it is part of the deal..

Just back from the Plaza. We were not on all inclusive, but others there were. We will be going back next year when it will be all inclusive only. I don't know what the pricing will be or what it will include or what the dema specials may be, but our group leader said it looked like around $300 more per person. That was for a jr suite, 11 boat dives, nitrox, 3 meals per day and beer/wine. Not clear if a truck was included. For us we also like to go to the excellent restaurants in town. However if the $300 add is true, that almost equals the amount we spent for lunch every day and 1 dinner! If we had used the bar rather than bought beer and wine for the room I'm sure it would be a good deal. As to the food itself, it varied from very very good to so-so. The had buffet options for AI folks at lunch and dinner that I didn't even look at so can't comment, but I'm told the regular menu is available to AI as well. The Tipsy Seagull is closed for renovations, but it was an additional cost for AI folks. Not sure why their site does not have much info on this. Maybe its too new and they are making updates. Oh and the shore dive is quite nice! Yea, its a schlepp from the dive shop, but they do keep air tanks stocked by the pool which is a short walk in. Loading tanks into your truck is also no problem. I'm sure there are other places more convenient, but over all, its a decent place.

We were at Plaza Resort the last week of November 2012. It is a nice place to stay and dive. We were all inclusive (including the bar which was a huge plus). It is not what a lot of Americans might think of as a "resort, " but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A car (CR-V) was included in our package. The food was good - I'm happy as long as I don't have to cook. The beach BBQ was fantastic!

I am pea green with envy that I am unable to go. It is a beautiful place to dive and I thoroughly enjoyed our boat dives. The house reef can be a little tricky getting in, but it is beautiful.

My review is another thread. Hope Jackson is still there - he's the best at the dive shop and works to make sure you get everything you can out of your diving.

Jackson is still there for sure! I think he told me he's been there like 19 years! They have several excellent dm's. Even though it might not be considered a dive resort, Toucan Diving is a top notch operation.
