I'm making my first trip down to Playa del Carmen on April 4th, for a week. I am looking forward to 2 days of diving. One day diving the cenotes and looking for some suggestions as to what to dive for the other, Cozumel or stay near Playa?

Also, I am staying at the Royal Haciendas, and understand it is a little more removed from most of the dive shops. I heard that Dive Balam is part of the Royal Haciendas, and that seems to be the most convenient shop to dive with, but looking for some suggestions as who to go with. It seems that Fantasea dive and Mexico Blue Dream dive shops are the most recommended. I'm not renting a car, so it may be tough to get around.

Any recommendations are appreciated!!!

I'd be taking the public bus to the ferry pier and heading to Coz. Plenty of dive buddies there. I always avoid uncooked fruits and vegetables and buy some Cipro at the pharmacia just in case a bout of violent diarrhea hits. HAVE FUN!

I would go with Jason from Fantasea dive. Even if you want to go over to Cozumel, which I recommend, he will arrange it. The best thing about diving with Jason is the personal service. He doesn't take out groups larger than 4 people so you don't have to deal with masses of other divers on the boat or underwater. I don't know how much a cab would be from your resort but its worth the trip into Playa Del Carmen to see him.

Another vote for Jason of Fantaseadive. I'm a repeat customer and would do it again given the chance.

Just got back from Playa. Had a great time. I highly recommend the guys at GeoFish Dive Center. You can read about my latest trip at http://www.academyofscuba.com/blog.

I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Not to hijack the thread, but may I also ask which dive shops/operations in Playa rent out larger steel tanks (say 100s or 120s)? I am planning a trip, and the info on this site regarding availability of steel tanks is outdated. So, I want to hear about dive shops AND steel tanks! Sounds like Geofish and Fantasea are both great...do either of them rent steel?

Hey Dennis, yes we rent out 100's no problem as well as Nitrox. If you have anyother questions don't hesitate to ask whether it be about the diving here in Playa or anything at, either I will answer it or someone on here will. Everyone on here is great and very helpful so feel free to ask. Take care.

I notice in your profile that you have only logged 0-24 dives. How is your buoyancy control? Unless it is good to excellent you might want to re-think the cenotes.

Hello Dennis. There is an air filling station called Aire Puro in Playa del Carmen, they have steel tanks for rent, where dive hops can get those tanks for you. Steel tanks are very rare in the area, most of the dive shops uses 80 cf aluminum tanks.
