Hey Steve. Do you guys have a mechanic who is talented with big Yamaha outboards? Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Hmm ok, thanks. If you have his contact info, could you pm it to me? Thanks a bunch.

Alright, I'm going to make an attempt at un-hijacking the thread... I have a couple of questions about what to bring...

I am not planning on bringing an exposure suit... Just a rash guard and board shorts. Should I consider having a 3 mil suit shipped over?

For fins, Which do people prefer? Open or Closed heal? I really prefer the convenience of closed heel and walking stuff around in flip flops, and they pack much lighter. Should I toss in the boots and fins instead?

Is there a laundry mat or laundry service readily available?

Are the LDS well stocked with the little items that make life easier? Do they carry the things that are sometimes required for various boat services (whistles, lights, flagging stuff)?

I am considering planning the first week and getting reservations and then playing it by ear once I get on the Island. I will probably have to find a new place anyhow if the Deep Blue is booked up. Is this going to be easy or should I try to get reservations for both weeks? Thanks!

Apologies again for hijacking the thread. I'll chime in on your questions. Unless you easily chill, no need for a wetsuit. I dive in shorts and a rash guard even in the dead of winter on Utila. Diving on Utila is super super easy. I can't remember ever being in current there. So, if you have both and like your closed heels, you can feel free to use those. Plenty of laundry services on Utila. Don't know about the resorts. Don't know about whistles, etc., but a new shop just opened on the island and I suspect that you can find that sort of stuff there. That said, on almost every dive you will be no more than 100 yards from shore, so don't go too overboard with safety gear. This isn't the galapagos or Raja Ampat where currents can be fierce and you are hundreds of miles from civilization. Generally, you can find lodging on the island when you arrive unless it is a holiday week. Depends on what your lodging requirements are. If you want something private and on the beach, you should go ahead and book it. Check out aboututila.com for the various lodging options and feel free to ask questions about them.

No worries about the Hi-Jack... my mind wonders pretty bad and I started looking at flats boats online... Speaking of that... Are there any fishing opportunities on the Island?

Yes, actually there is good fishing on Utila. If you fly fish, the lagoons are great for Tarpon and Rock Harbor is great for Bones.

If you prefer deep water fishing, there are a number of people who can take you. Just be forewarned, its not the big sportfishing boats you are used to, but lots of fun nevertheless. Huge Marlin, Wahoo, Tuna and others are catchable.

Please avoid fishing for reef fish as they are under enough pressure as it is.

My two cents worth (or 2 billion for the bailouts-:D). I'm headed back to Utila and staying/diving with DeepBlue for the third time. It's a great place--pure great diving and unparallled relaxation. One of my favorite places to stay and I've dove most of the rest of the Caribbean. The only place that comes close is Little Cayman and St. Vincent. Really excellent. We're doing Fish ID and the diversity there exceeds Roatan's.

See ya Saturday, Steve!
