I think it is wrong to do this to a mom and pop, because it does affect their bottom line. There is a distinct difference between a large corporation and a mom and pop shop. Stealing is stealing. Returning something is not stealing.

I have a reply that I would love to post here but I have not desire to chastised with cause and probably put on probation.

This is a pet peeve of mine. There are people out there who purchase stuff knowing that when they are done using it, they are going to return it. I heard about someone who purchased an expensive flat screen for a diving convention, knowing that he would return it after the show was over. A friend of mine heard someone in Costco buying mask/snorkel/fin sets for his entire family. In the checkout line they were discussing how they were going to return them after their two week vacation ended. I don't care if it's Costco or a mom and pop dive shop trying to eek out a living. That's just wrong. Shameful. And you wonder why shops hem and haw over returns. They have to determine if it's a legit return or someone using them. Please tell me that none of you do this!

You've met my wife.:D:D

The timeliness of this thread is amazing. I work for a fortune 500 company, so it's by no means a "mom and pop" operation. My company just announced a new return policy that will take effect after the new year.

It's aimed at tightening up the policy because of the losses sustained because of the people who have chosen to abuse it.

It wouldn't surpise me if many of the large retailers don't implement more stringent policies in the near future as well.

A couple pages back, an anology or two were given about buying tools at Home Depot or Lowes and then returning them. Someone even mentioned talking to a manager about this, and the manager being ok with it. Home Depot and Lowes have a great system setup that returned tools make into their equipment rental stock. They have a way to use the returns and make money from it. They even get to write off the return then move the new "rental" at a lower cost to them. I don't see Costco renting out the snorkling equipment.

Also, many stores now recognize the "I only need one use" method that customers are using. Try to legitimately return a gas generator in Florida after a hurricane.
