This is a pet peeve of mine. There are people out there who purchase stuff knowing that when they are done using it, they are going to return it. I heard about someone who purchased an expensive flat screen for a diving convention, knowing that he would return it after the show was over. A friend of mine heard someone in Costco buying mask/snorkel/fin sets for his entire family. In the checkout line they were discussing how they were going to return them after their two week vacation ended. I don't care if it's Costco or a mom and pop dive shop trying to eek out a living. That's just wrong. Shameful. And you wonder why shops hem and haw over returns. They have to determine if it's a legit return or someone using them. Please tell me that none of you do this!

The shop I worked at gave store credit.

What did the shop do with the returned gear? Put it into rental? Put it on sale as used gear? ..... What if the customer returns the gear purchased with the store credit? And, yes, I have witnessed that happen. At some point, it's like, OK, you might find products you like better at another shop, hint hint (take your "business" elsewhere).

This is why the restocking fee was invented...

Why do you care if someone takes advantage of a giant faceless corporation like costco? If people taking advantage of return policies was hurting the bottom line, the policy would change. Maybe it's dishonest to buy something planning on returning it later, but seems strange that you would waste any emotion on poor costco.
It might be worth being bothered if people were doing this to a mom and pop shop, but costco? Give me a break.

So, stealing is OK when done to a large company?

No one is talking about sealing. If costco or other companies with lenient return policies thought they were being stolen from, they would not allow it.

Besides, what's the point in getting upset about it. I didn't say it was OK, I just said I didn't see the point getting upset about it. If you think it is wrong, don't do it. If costco decides it is wrong they will stop allowing it. As of right now, costco thinks that allowing customers to do this is good business.

Personally I find it pretty offensive to call people thieves who havn't stolen anything.

Stealing is stealing no matter who you do it to. By the fact that you have access to a computer, the Internet and live in the United States you have demonstrated you are one of the worlds most wealthiest inhabitants. So by your logic you feel it is perfectly O.K. for others to steal from you since you are weathly by the world's standards.

Furthermore, stealing of any kind in retail is passed on to the consumer so ultimately the theft is really against the consumer not the retailer.
