Board,

I am planning a trip to Belize in late May early June. I have been reading the reports from Ambergris Caye and Placencia on the board and leaning towards Ambergris Caye. We will be a team of four with one non diver ( my wife, lung injury; snorkling only from now on) and one new diver.

My son and his wife are just returning from Iraq and really need some R&R. He is a diving instructor and Navy Seal and she (a MASH nurse) is a new diver. We are looking to stay at Ramon's Resort (also heard good things about Victoria House) as the wife wants a great beach close to the action, with amenities. My son wants good diving and to get his wife more experience.

We also want to explore the mainland and see some ruins and horseback riding. So I am asking if I am on the correct path with resort and island. If I am off base, please let me know as I would like to make this a great vacation for them ( I will be happy just to get back in the water). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ramon's Village looked like a great resort, it's very close to everything... We were in San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) last April and did a lot of diving... We had our 18 yr old non-diver with us. There are many trips that you can do where your wife can snorkel and you all can dive... You will really love the charming town, we did. Be sure to look at the Ambergris chat site: http://ambergriscaye.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=4;DaysPrune=20

It has great information and it's a fountain of information...

We also are going to Belize for the first time, next week. We chose the Hamanasi resort, a bit north of Placencia, in Danriga for the same reasons, good diving fairly nearby and great land excursions too. Other divers who have been there before say it's a bit of a boat ride to the best dive sights, but the land options for the nondiver are a big plus. Enjoy! Jim

You can't do mainland activities from Ambergris Caye, but from the Placencia Penninsula you can easily combine diving with lots of topside attractions. The beach is considerably nicer in and around Placencia (vs. Ambergris Caye and specifically the beach in front of Ramon's), the town is more charming, and there are some lovely resorts north of town -- nicer than Ramon's for sure. (We dove with Ramon's and stayed next door in a private apartment during our 3 days on Ambergris). Not to knock Ramon's -- it is what is is, as is Ambergris Caye -- but we very much preferred Placencia. You might want to consider what we did -- 3 days on Ambergris and then a week in Placencia. That allowed us to sample the best of both!

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. Looks like we will have to postpone the vacation as my son has been re-assigned to another mission. We will have to wait and see if he has to go or not.

I did look into several resorts in the Placencia area and they did look nicer than Ramon's, however all were booked for the weeks we were planning. No matter now.

Thanks again to all and please write a report when you return, as I would like to get down to that area at least once.
