So I was having a nice relaxing weekend on the boat(docked) in Newport Beach with my wife when Sunday morning I wake up to find the news of all the fires on TV. We immediately went home to Thousand Oaks and a few hours later this is what our apartment complex looked like. I white balanced my camera to something white in the apt so these colors are true to real life. I made no color adjustments to the photos at all. These were shot with my Fuji e900 Point & Shoot with a wide angle adapter.

I just cannot believe this....15 years iun SoCal and I never saw anything like this before.

I am wondering about cousins on Malibu Canyon road.....their house is like in a crack, one way in and one way out, this thing is their biggest fear.

I left just in time to miss all the action. Hopefully it'll all be gone when I get home.

I think right now that the homes on Malibu Cyn Road are Okay. The fire started at Malibu Colony Drive which runs into Malibu Road. We dive Malibu Road monthly too, it's really this amazing reef called Gorgonian City that can only be found by underwater navigation. I hope your cousins make it out Okay.

Obviously we've had problems with fires in the last 10 years and I've seen the sky turn amber before but this time it had a very different hue. Maybe because it wasn't as close as it usually is to where I live.

John, I'm glad you're out of town my friend! I'm jealous.

The night before were the worst winds I ever experienced living here. Up to 70 mph in the flats and near 100 mph in the canyons. What was different this time was how "sustained" they were...no variation in the strength or direction. It is very hard to breathe and hard on the eyes.

The fires were probably 20 miles away, but you could still smell the smoke and ash was falling. I have a friend who is a dentist in San Diego who had to evacuate his home and close his practice. The smoke is blowing straight out to sea and will probably settle and linger on the surface for the next week or so. There is an amazing satellite photo on some news site showing this.

A lot of property has been lost. I feel so badly for those folks. Even worse, at least one fire is believed to be arson.

It looks like a nuclear winter here in SoCal. Next up: Rains and mudslides. The cycle keeps repeating.

I left Catalina yesterday (despite gale force wind warnings up, the Channel crossing wasn't too bad). Drove up to Thousand Oaks to see a former dive buddy and her family before they move to Oregon. We tried to drive up to Santa Barbara today so the kids could play in some fresh air, but the smoke looked worse up there than it was here so we turned around.

You've heard the joke... people say we have no weather in Southern California. BS, we have Earthquake season, Fire season, Flood season and Drought! :mooner:
