Steve - I've been diving in Phuket twice; went with Dive Asia both times - had an excellent time with them each time. Dive Asia will pick you up wherever you are staying. I've stayed in Patong beach and Kata - more night life in Patong, of course, but you won't have a shortage of hotels to choose from. If you choose Patong, I've stayed at the Seaview Patong Beach - very nice hotel, southern end of Patong, so you are away from Bangla Road, across the street from the beach.
