Amazing pictures, but very uncertain identification. From this site, the "golden rays" are identified as "Rhinoptera steindachneri." However,Fishbase.org says that that species (also known as the Pacific cownose ray) is found in the eastern Pacific ocean, not around the the Yucatan Peninsula which is on the east coast of Mexico. The story adds that the rays migrate clockwise from western Florida to the Yucatan. That's a bit difficult if they are not found in the Gulf. Had to be somewhere in the Pacific or a different species.
I think the problem is that the article uses common names instead of scientific. If this was taken off the Yucatan, I think the most accurate species name would be Rhinopterus bonasus (the Atlantic Cownose ray).
