As a new diver, and one that loves gear related to my hobbies (i.e. carbon road bike, carbon mountain bike, downhill ski setup, backpacking, car camping, blah blah blah), I had to have my own scuba gear. I'm a newly minted OW diver and bought a like new ScubaPro Knighthawk BC for $250 and a lightly used first and second stage ScubaPro MK25 S600 reg, as well as an Oceanic SPG. All in, I'm like $620. I know I'm in to get the set serviced, but still super cheaper than going all new. A new BC costs like $700 bux for Pete's sake!!!
A new ScubaPro Knighthawk, yes. Based a quick browse of Leisurepro, ScubaPro non-closeout, new BCDs start around the $450-$500 mark. Did you see how multiple people said SP was expensive though? Leisurepro sells multiple brands (not ScubaPro) and models of BCD as low as $180 brand new! Looks like quite a few choices (still not ScubaPro though) start popping up in the $250+ range. Even buying new, you don't have to pay anywhere near $700.

Like most things in life, you can pay almost anything you want!

I started out when my kids were little, so I was far too poor to buy new gear. :-)

Fortunately, the dive shop offered used regs that were totally serviced for sale at a reasonable cost, so I was able to slowly build up my gear by carefully watching my pennies and buying things that came on sale at the shop or used (serviced) rental gear. My first "brand new" purchase was my Whites bi-lam drysuit after my AOW. At the time, that was nice.

Years later I've of course spent lots on gear, much of it new. I'm still always on the lookout for quality deals.

The LDS is having their annual flea market this weekend, hopefully they're going to have the gear I want. I'll settle for used gear. Originally I only wanted one brand, but that's unrealistic.
