Patent has a variety of meanings -- they all relate back things like

open
unobstructed
obvious
public

A patent is an invention that has been openly disclosed to the public.

In return for the "opening to the public" disclosure, an inventor gets exclusive rights for a limited number of years.

I don't know whether other people notice the same thing, but if I do things like cough, or repeatedly increase chest pressure while blowing bubble rings at the safety stop, that I feel bad after the dive.

My suspicion is that I have a PFO and the coughing and puffing passes small bubbles into the arterial side.

Just like in the old joke about "Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do xxxx" "Well, don't do that!", I am now careful about how forcefully I go poof, poof, poof when blowing bubble rings.

Thank you, I didn't know.

Charlie ... I would think that a suspicion of having one, would be enough reason to be tested for a PFO
Unless I would have an operation to fix it, it doesn't make sense to do a test. Having looked into it a bit, it doesn't look like the risks of the operation are warranted. I have adjusted my dive habits a bit, and became a real fan of deep stops several years ago.

You've already informed yourself and made a decision then.
I hope all good dives for you .. stay safe

Edit: I know someone who had that operation .. was home not 24 hours later
