I see that the ongoing joke that if you run out of air and your PADI instructor assists you in getting back to the surface, that you get charged for a lesson.

A few years back, I went on a deep dive at Lake Travis with a PADI Dive Instructor and his class. We went down to the Grottos where he purged air into the pockets so people could stick their heads in there to talk.

Well, when he started to purge his air, it didn't stop. He signaled to me that he was getting low on air so started I handed him my Octo and we abort the rest of the dive.

Does this mean I get a refund, or a free class?

(note. After this happened, I decided it would be a good idea to get my Rescue Diver's cert)

I doubt you'll get a refund but you should get a new instructor. Strike that. Get a better one cuz it sounds like you already had a new one.

No instructor worth the fee is going to want to free flow the reg he's depending on for his breathing gas on a deep dive. In deep or cold water or when a significant amount of air is needed for something like a lift bag (or this crazy stunt) you use a seperate gas supply braught specifically for that purpose. I would have been tempted to let him practice his CESA technique. I'd be worried about letting any one that IQ challenged get too close.

I agree with Mike 100%.

OTOH, putting air into underwater pockets??? What might that do to the environment? Or do I misunderstand the situation?

I once knew an instructor who did this inside a wreck ... with the same effect (free-flow).

He's lucky Darwin was on vacation that day ... :11:

It's a good way to get a freeflow and also a good way to kill people.

If someone came up in the bubble expecting it to be breathable, they might discover that someone else had already used up the O2 in it.
