Horrible accident. The Grand Riviera Princess is a highly rated, pricey property.

CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) - At least four Canadian tourists and two workers were killed on Sunday in a gas explosion at a hotel on Mexico's Caribbean coast, authorities said.

A child was among the dead at the Grand Riviera Princess hotel in the beach resort of Playa del Carmen, Francisco Alor, the attorney general for Quintana Roo state, told Reuters.

About 15 to 20 people were injured, he said.

"Under no circumstances are we talking about an attack. It was an explosion of gas and we are determining the causes," Alor said.
Looks like the actual death loss may be 6: 4 Canadians, 2 employees?

Excerpting from The Press Association: Six killed in Mexican hotel blast
The explosion happened in the lobby of the 676-room Grand Riviera Princess hotel in Playa del Carmen...a large complex with more than a dozen buildings.

Terrible news!

The death loss is still at 6 from most reports.
The explosion was likely caused by a buildup of natural gas that somehow ignited, but the official cause is under investigation, the attorney general's office said.
Anyone know if Mexico requires a foul smell to be added to gaseous fuels like in the US?

I read it was sewer gas or Methane generated by rotting garbage. Methane has no smell of its own. I am pretty sure they add mercaptan to all cooking gas in Mexico, be it Methane, Propane or Butane.

With all due respect to the extent of this tragedy, when you bulldoze a swamp and then cover all that organic material with impervious cover, this is the end product. It is surprising that it doesn't happen more frequently with all the illegal and non-inspected construction in this part of the country.

Not surprised at all by this. These new resorts are not built well. I was down at the Royal Haciendas about two years ago, when they were hawking them. I am hardly a structural engineer, but the place was brand new and the entirety of our visit showed stress fractures and cracks from not building on a solid base. I used to think that swamp gas was only related to UFO's....now it's blowing up resorts.

Wat they said of TV was that it blew refrigerator size chunks of concrete out of the ground.

I found this on Cozumelinsider.com/news/:

"Prison for Those Responsible for Princess Hotel Explosion that Killed 7 12/9 Investigations into the cause of an explosion 3 weeks ago on 11/14 at the Princess Hotel & Resort in Playa del Carmen have concluded that an LP gas leak was responsible for the devastation that killed 7 persons including 5 Canadian tourists, and injured 20 others. Furthermore, there appear to be a series of supervision abberrations whereby some one was allowed to install a few LP gas pipes that were not authorized. It was in one of the above mentioned unauthorized pipes where the LP gas escape registered, accumulated and then unleashed the catastrophic explosion that ripped through the hotel.

The lack of proper supervision demonstrated by the existence of the unauthorized LP gas pipes amounts to criminal negligence on the part of the Princess Hotel and Resort management. This is the reason that the Ministerio Publico continues to build its case for murder under file# 3238/2010 with the intention of sending those responsible for the mismanagement to prison. It is expected within the next few weeks that the Ministerio Publico will request arrest warrants for those in charge of the hotel alleging the crime of murder."

I stand corrected on my prior comments regarding accumulation of swamp gas, and apologize to any swamp that I may have offended by my remarks.
