I can get my family to buy into hanging on the beach at Paradise Cove and/or eating at the restaurant there. Now that I'm beach diving some obvious questions are whether beach diving is permitted there and is it any good. I asked a couple of people at the Wrinkles event this past weekend and I got back a concern about the water quality (trailer park near the beach). Has anyone dived Paradise cove? What's it like?

Jim,

Dove there many years ago.

Main concerns.

1) Extra cost of parking --- or eating at the restaurant (will validate for a limited time) -- Paradise Cove Beach Cafe, 10 bucks will get ya a burger. Wednesday or Thursday before 5 it's 1/2 off.

2) Pollution --trailer park is where they used to film the TV show Rockford Files.

Good points:

Access and entries were pretty easy.

Good beach for the family to hang out at.

At the time, good amount of kelp and sea life. Unknown now.

Probably don't have to worry about your car getting broken into since the lot is somewhat secure.

Thanks Mel and Kev:

I pulled the Beach Advisories site and for the 30 day grade Paradise Cove had the only D (there were also 2 Fs) while Leo, where we dived last weekend, is an A. I'm not diving a D, even if its convenient.

Beach Grade Methodology

The log mean for the past 30 days of data for each sampling station is calculated for total coliform, fecal coliform or E. coli and enterococcus bacteria. Sampling data that are influenced by rainfall are excluded.

The 30 day log mean is applied to the tables below to arrive at a grade. Since a grade is generated for each of the 3 types of bacteria tested at each station, the lowest of the three grades is used as the assigned grade.

If there are less than 4 test results in a 30 day period for any of the 3 bacteria tests, the results are considered insufficient to assign a grade. If all 3 bacteria tests fall into this category the sampling station is assigned an "ID" (insufficient data to assign a grade).

The table for E. coli is used in place of Fecal Coliform for sampling data from the Department of Health Service's due to the method of testing performed.

Total Coliform
A <=500 (org/100ml.)
B 501 - 1000
C 1001 - 2000
D 2001 - 3000
F >3000
Fecal Coliform
A <=100 (org/100ml.)
B 101 - 200
C 201 - 400
D 401 - 600
F >600

E. coli
A <=80 (org/100ml.)
B 81 - 160
C 161 - 320
D 321 - 480
F >480

Enterococcus
A <=18 (org/100ml.)
B 19 - 35
C 36 - 70
D 71 - 105
F >105

Might be safer to scuba in a toilet bowl...

I dove paradise a couple years ago,,,its a nice dive if you hit it on the right day. Its has a nice outer reef with great halibut potential.
