You should definitely do a lot of research before travelling to a country like PNG. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there are very real risks which are much more serious and scary than many other destinations in developing countries. If you poke into the pacific islands subforum under Australia/New Zealand/pacific islands, there's probably some trip reports there.
Personally, I'm not going to spend my money giving tourism income to countries like PNG, Myanmar, etc... But that's a decision every person has to make for themselves.
