The thickest kelp bed around Palos Verdes can be found along the shore near Haggerty's. The reef is shallow and rocky. Near the outer edge of the kelp, one of the great finds of Palos Verdes lives. Felimare californiensis, thought to be nearly extinct twenty years ago can be found among the rocks and sponges in thirty-five feet. Snails and tiny nudibranchs form nurseries in the upper fronds of the kelp. Occasionally harbor seals and soupfin sharks pass through the area.
The trailhead to Haggerty's is located near the corner of Paseo del Mar and Via Chino. The trail is short but the lower section is a bit tricky. There is polypro line if you need to hold onto something, and the rocky shore is shallow for several yards out. In the surf is down and visibility is good, the dive is worth the effort.
