Thank you all for your insight. I don’t know how long their day was but I did recommend they drop the open water dives wit this guy and finish up with another instructor that they meet ahead of time and are comfortable with. I also suggested hiring a private instructor. I know a couple that I think would be good. Unfortunately, one of them was tramatized to the point that she no longer wants to continue.

1 day doesn’t seem reasonable to me. I got my OW in the off season in Puerto Galara, it was just me and the instructor so he asked if I wanted to skip the pool altogether and just do skills training on shore dives. It was nice and shallow, very little current, perfect visibility, and warm.

Even with the individual attention we did 4 dives over 2 days. I could have done the 5th and got the card in one weekend but I had to take the ferry back to Manila and I didn’t want to push it. I did my 5th dive and got my card on my next trip. It was a good pace and enjoyable for me, I would not want to have tried to cram the skills training into one day.

I think the main issue here is expectation management rather than "one day".

Let's squeeze everything into one day when you were expecting two because I'm lazy and don't want to work more hours. That's a big nope. But there's plenty who does the confine water part in one day, not counting classroom/e-learning.

If not comfortable with an instructor for whatever reason, look elsewhere. Everybody learns to some extent in their own way, a factor not necessarily caused by bad pedagogy but human interaction as well. No flies on going where you get better results.

How was she traumatized?

I have a question relating to PADI trading. I am not interested in an agency bashing session and am looking for constructive input relating to the specific topic. Thank you.

My sister-in-law had her first, and only pool session today for her Open Water cert. She said the instructor came in saying they were going to complete all pool work in one day so he didn’t have to work tomorrow. Of course he couched it that they would have the day off also. So, in cramming everything into one day, he really stressed her out and her friend decided that scuba wasn’t for her and just quit. So bad reactions for them both. My opinion is they should terminate their relationship with him immediately and not complete their open water dives next weekend which is what I expect to be the general reaction around here.

My question, however, is what are PADI Instrctors supposed to do? When I was certified about 15 years ago, we did the pool work over two days with an evening between to contemplate what you learned and adjust your thinking. I thought that PADI required it over two days. Is that correct? I’m pretty sure the open water dives have to happen over two days because you can only complete 3 dives in one day and 4 are required. So, I am wondering whether a) he is just a crappy instructor or b) he is a crappy instructor and should be reported to his certifying agency. Either way, he is getting reported to the associated dive shop, whom I’ve been shopping at for a decade and a half.

Thanks for your input and it would be great if people with specific PADI knowledge would chime in.
All poo in one day along with first OW "dive". Three remaining OW "dives" next day. And then I was a certificated scooba diber.

More certification, less education.

“Traumatized” may have been a little strong but she was put off enough to quit about half-way through the day which didn’t seem to affect the way he was conducting the class. At one point he tried to talk them into skipping lunch so they could finish sooner.

Put off then. What put her off it?

What put her off was his aggressively pushing them to complete the skills portion in one day regardless of their comfort with their grasp of the skills.

Different instructor then. Maybe a gal, if you can find one.
