Hi Folks...

I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can find some of the basic PADI manuals online for purchase. I've found some at DiversDirect.com, but wasn't sure if that was the best price available. I'd like to start reading up on some of the courses out there.

Thanks...

Kawika

I have heard that some are available on Ebay, but I must caution you that no matter WHO you get your training materials from, CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE THE MOST CURRENT, UP-TO-DATE ONES AVAILABLE.

IOW, check the copyright date. (Maybe a call to PADI?) There are lots of oldies floating around out there that you can get for a great price because they are out of date.

caveat emptor Let the buyer beware!

I have seen them on ebay, but make sure they are current like SubMariner said and also make sure they they still contain the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter (my instructor required that they be completed and turned in).

I usually got my books from the LDS or diver's direct (which is local to me).

Yeah...I'm not really considering Ebay as an option simply because I'd prefer to get my text books brand new (although I am sure they are available through Ebay brand new as well). I also know what you mean when you say get the latest text available...in our Nitrox class last night...they issued two versions of the text...one was obviously an older version...while a couple of us got the newer versions. I'm just hoping that the test coincides with the text I read through... :) I've also noticed that there is a good $10-$30 mark up on most text books versus what I've seen available online. I'm surprised that you can't purchase them directly through PADI...at least then we would all know what the set price for the products are from the start.

Unfortunately, the general consumer cannot purchase directly from PADI; you need to be a PADI member (PADI Professional, Local Dive Shop, etc.) to do that.

I don't know if PADI has a recommended price for their manuals, but there seems to be some price differences from LDS to LDS. You would think that they would be all more or less the same, but not so.

Yeah...I haven't noticed a real drastic difference in prices...mainly a $5-$10 difference in most cases...which roughly translates to what I see online as well. I guess the only benefit from purchasing online would come if you bought a lot of manuals at once from an out of state shop...then you save on state sales tax...but if you are just purchasing one manual...chances are the money you save on sales tax is negated by the costs of shipping.
