Hello,

I am looking to take Rescue Diver in the near future and have seen many posts about divers learning so much and finding it to be a very valuable class. I am curious to know:

1. What type of activities are required/performed during the class?
2. What skills/scenarios are run?

While I used any old method to get certified as well as for advanced, I want to be a bit more careful when considering an instructor. I do not want an instructor with factory producing speed but rather a practical challenging instructor that finds my weaknesses and makes me a better diver.

Thanks!

re: 1.

I don't know about PADI, but I have a copy of the NAUI Advanced Scuba Rescue Diver requirements in an email. I'll paste them if you are interested.

I'm not certain (can check when I get home), but I think Rescue is the same minus the first two lines.

PADI Rescue skills include;

Tired diver rescue at the surface
Paniced diver rescue at the surface
Unresponsive diver rescue at the surface
Tired diver rescue on the bottom
Paniced diver rescue on the bottom
Unresponsive diver rescue on the bottom
Missing diver search and recovery

The above scenarios include kit removal, towing, ascent with unconcious victim and search patterns.

There's probably more that I can't think of right now but that's the bulk of it.

I believ e you will carry a person out of the water using different methods. My buddy was big and weighed probably 40 lbs more than I. Buddy up with the smallest person. Youll do a firemans carry out of the water onto the dry ground and over the shoulder carry onto dry ground if I remember right.

So do some working out abit before.

If you're doing the class with your regular dive buddy, obviously buddy up with him/her. Otherwise, find someone of like size (to your buddy, not yourself). You're training to rescue those you'll most likely be around. My girlfriend (5'3, 105#) carried me (6', 170#) out of the water. I'm sure you can do the same. Picking the smallest person just so the class is "easier" defeats the purpose of the tranining to me. Practice for what you can expect to see. If someone really thinks they're too weak to get a typical sized diver out of the water, what good will the rescue skills serve?

Actaully you didnt see the humor in my post. Maybe I should have put a lol in there. My class was only 2 people so I had no choice. We had a few shore helpers to complete the scenarios. Well in that case pick the biggest person so if you ever have to rescue someone its that much easier hopefully. OK LOL

Goof luck on your class and keep on going to the next level DM or MD.
