So, eventually, I would like to take the rescue diver course. I think it is a valuable course to take. Anyway, I was just wondering what the swimming requirements are for this course. In OW, you have to swim 200 meters and float for 10 minutes...is there something like this you have to do for the rescue diver course?

I did a search and found lots of info on the course, but not what the swimming requirements are. If this has been asked before (which I am sure it has...) I am sorry! I couldn't find it. :(

My understanding is that there is no specific swimming requirement (as such) though there is poolwork & dives dealing with lost / paniced / etc divers :)

Not that I was discussing this with my LDS yesterday or anything :D

Really good stuff -- highly recommended. No swimming requirements, as such, but you'll do things like tired diver tow, a variety of rescues with paniced divers, bringing an unconcious diver up from the bottom.

There's no swimming requirement? Cool. I thought there was. Perhaps I was thinking of the DM course or something.

Thanks for the quick responses.

There is no swimming or surface floating requirement for rescue divers. You will definitely see them when you going further to DM.

But I would suggest you do some swimming laps to get yourself ready for the openwater session of Rescue Diver. It does help!!!

There's a nice PADI DM requirements overview, the stamina requirements are at:

While page 1 of the thread has a DM Overview.pdf that also discusses the non-stamina exercises.

You have to have a current CPR cert. You need a first aid course, although I'm not certain it's a prerequisite. I'm in the medical field and did not have to take the first aid because I'm trained in it already. But there is no swimming requirement. Don't let that fool you though. The surface and underwater rescue scenarios you have to perform...well, let's say that after you get through with them you may have wished it was only a swimming requirement. I would recommend you be in good shape or get that way before you sign up. It is a strenuous course.
