I just got recertified after a break of thirty years or so. I immediately joined DAN. I recently got a mailing from the PADI Diving Society. Beyond the magazine subscription does anyone have any opinion of the possible value of membership?

It's a good way for you to live up to the PADI reputation - Put Another Dollar In.

I didn't take advantage of them until recently, but they send you a book with some coupons and rebates in them I used enough of them in the past 3 months to offset the cost of membership. Discounts on training, free gifts with purchase of certain items, etc. I got $20 for turining in receipts for rescue diver/EFR classes, a free lobster bag for buying a UK light kit, $75 discount on some classes with a dive op when my buddy took the same classes, etc. If you actually use them it is some degree of benefit.

You'll get mail!

I've renewed by PADI Diving Society just for the Sport Diver magazine. For me at least, the coupons have been worthless because I haven't been able to use any. Having said that, there are many individual coupons that would more than pay back the cost of membership. Many liveaboard and resort coupons, gear and training discounts, and some car and hotel deals. When/If you're adding gear or certifying another diver in the family, there are lots of coupons that could be used.

My son and I were watching the PADI Certification DVD and it came to the part where the voiceover said that there would be times when you might not have a good time diving. (That seemed fair enough.) The voiceover then explained that if that happened it was probably your damn fault and explained several approaches to fix it - all involved spending more money. In spite of myself, I started laughing. Of course, the answer is to spend more and more.

Always best to stay amused.

The magazine isn't that bad. But it is biased towards doing things the "padi way", which is to be expected. But it's also not worth the $29 to $36 bucks they want for being a member in order to get the magazine.

check your local dive shop. Mine gives away free issues of it.

Yea, if I could only get out of my LDS for less than $50...
