Hello,

I am training to become a PADI Divemaster and I have a question regarding stamina requirements. I would like to know whether ankle weights may be used during the 800 yard snorkel swim, or if they are considered to be a "swimming aid" and therefore not permitted? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Since you are on top of the water for this, I am curious as to why you would want them. I personally would consider than more of a swimming hindrance than a swimming aid.

I recently watched a PADI divemaster try to do her swims and during her snorkel she asked to use ankle weights to keep her fins lower in the water in order to help her have better propulsion, is this what the OP is speaking about?

Surface swim, weights shouldnt be needed. I would think it would make your legs tire faster.

The 2011 Instructor Manual indicates no floatation aids. Ankle weights aren't really 'floatation' aids but the person certifying you might see it differently.

use snorkel fins

I'm not sure what they would do for you anyway. I guess, as suggested, they may keep your fins deeper in the water, but fins don't really come out of water much if at all when surface swimming. At least I doubt not anywhere near enough to offset the extra work of dragging around ankle weights.

If you need to execute a rescue, will you have time to strap on ankle weights?

Why would you want to? Ankle weights would be a hindrance not a help. If you need ankle weights to snorkel you might need a little instruction on proper fining technique for snorkeling.

WHY!? How about more info...who suggested ankle weights? What thought process brought this idea up?

What logic is there to adding weight when surface swimming....If you are looking at some way to increase (or decrease) your swim abilities then perhaps you might want to reconsider becoming a DM.........Do the skills on your own merit.
