They do, but I doubt you'd find one at a resort anyway.

Tec 40 is basic deco on your backgas, tec 45 adds a stage bottle. Just take an AN/DP class, it'll be much more respected anyway

Incorrect

Tec 40 - Max 10 mins deco with up to 50% EANx for deco gas (single stage bottle)
Tec 45 - No limit stated for deco, up to 100% O2 for deco gas (single stage bottle)
Tec 50 - No limit stated for deco, up to 100% O2 for deco gas (two stage bottles)

Incorrect

His post made me chuckle. Claims the course won't be "respected", then shows he has absolutely no understanding of the course...and is prepared to post completely inaccurate, useless info. I mean, seriously,..the right info is a google-search away. A little research never hurt - especially if you want to make yourself sound knowledgeable on an internet forum.

Bluffers101... get with it. LMAO

Hi Bert,

If you are looking at doing the Tec 40 class, Ken at Northwest Scuba is a Tec 40 instructor, and I believe he is planning a trip to Utila to do some tec diving there.

PADI TecRec is just releasing a 'Tec Basics' course. It's one step above the confined water 'Discover Tec' and one step below the 'Tec40'. It's classed as a distinctive speciality - doesn't qualify you for tec diving, but provides a more detailed intro into tec skills and equipment.

I think it's 2 dives - which is basically the first Tec40 dive split into 2. Those dives will introduce most of the primary skills needed for doubles, along with gas management and dive planning.

I have recently completed tec 40 and 45. I believe if you have the right instructor it IS the equivalent of AN/DP for TDI. I have the AN/DP manual and required skills/knowledge to qualify and I did all those. If you have a good padi tec deep instructor who has actual deco dive experience it was awesome. I got my butt kicked to china and back twice! and came out the other end a much better diver (It did take me nearly 9 month for both tec 40/45, even with 500+ dives as a rec. instructor, but I have a feeling I got an extra butt kicking beca iuse I am a rec instructor, it was never pass or fail for me, I had to practice and improve before I was able to final certification dives) What I have learned in the last year has made me such a better diver, and I was already humble and I still ate pie. p.s. done in doubles from tec 40 and in 45F water, added dryglove gloves to suit after first "intro dive" on doubles)

As far as respectablilty....I have thought alot about this....Padi tec is a dirty word....as a padi instructor I am acutely aware of this...I can either buy into the common thought that I SUCK or do my very damnest to be the very best diver I can be regardless of the card I carry. I have seen experienced divers & instructors in the water who started diving & teaching around the same time as me, and I know the various agencies of cards they carry, that doesn't matter to me as to what the card du jour is. They just seem to have the attitude of continuing to strive to be better, that IS respectable.

Well, I have been carrying on an email conversation with the instructor and if I understand what he said plus what is on his website, it appears that the TDI AD/DP is equivalent to the PADI Tec 40, 45 and 50 combined. Unfortunately, for me to complete these three course plus my SM course on this trip, I would have to spend pretty much the entire 2 weeks on course. Normally that wouldn't bother me but I have my daughter with me on this trip so abandoning her for the entire trip would be unacceptable so I will have to rig my Nomad for BM and figure something else out for the course work.

Thanks for all the replies.

PADI are really promoting the TecRec program with alacrity. Resorts that offer the courses can now be branded as 'TecRec' centres, allowing easy identification. That's very new now. No question about the 'acceptability' of the PADI tec courses - they're being marketed to high hell... just like PADI do with everything, so I doubt they'll remain the 'little boys' for much longer.

yeah, I guess it's not surprising though considering the popularity of places like truk where there is a clear benefit to being able to do 50m dives and staged deco.

the introductory prices trying to lure instructors to be certified for TecRec were... competitive... to say the least.
