Don't know about your upcoming charter but on the NC boats I dive on they usually have a couple of DM which are also instructors, or can get one on the boat quickly.

It's pretty uncommon to have DMs on California boats, at least not ones who are expecting to get wet. It may be worth the effort to bring someone along for a longer trip, but this was just a one day thing. I was simply upset that we could not book, given that most shops are happy to accept a logbook in lieu of a cert card. I guess we have lots of lawyers here to write the rules.

We have decided instead to take the ferry to Catalina and dive Casino Point. I am sure we'll have fun in Southern California one way or another!

I have noted that is is much cheaper to hire a DM in NC than in California for a boat. In CA I had to buy a ticket and pay the DM while in NC it more like a heavy tip just to the DM.

@CPrincess I know it is a bit of a drive for you but if you can make it to Dutch Springs Oct 14-15 I will make sure you get your AOW card for less than the cost of a full course. As usual, the good folks here at SB have turned a simple question with a simple solution into a complex discussion. There is some work to be done but it isn't the big deal it has been made out to be.

I am not an instructor, but I am in the process of taking my DM course and becoming familiar with the Instructor Manual.

As far as I can see from the 'Paperwork and Administrative Procedures' part:
Dive 1 of a PADI Specialty Diver course may credit toward the related Adventure Dive in the Adventures in Diving program if the diver has completed the relevant knowledge review (or vice versa).

From that, my understanding is that 3 random specialties (with dives) plus the Nav specialty should already count. But the certifying instructor would need to administer the knowledge reviews again and conduct the Deep adventure dive. Obviously it has the get-out word "may" in there, so I guess there is instructor discretion, as per wetb4igetinthewater's concerns.

As I say, there are much more qualified people than me in this thread, but as I've been reading the manual recently, thought I'd chime in.

Thank you so much, but maybe in the late spring. :) a few too many vacations already planned and to much $$ spent through the end of '17.

You are totally correct as to at Instructor's discretion and yes dive 1 of each specialty could count towards adventure diver but knowledge reviews must be completed by student also for Advanced Open Water- deep & navigation dives are required.

The knowledge reviews for the AOW dives are the same as the knowledge reviews for the first dives of the specialties, so if they have done the specialties, they have done the knowledge reviews for those dives.
