After careful research we discovered that the PADI Scuba Diver Certification Program we have been running in 3 days can now be conducted in 2 days.
That's right, complete the PADI online course, one day pool skills, second day certification. The dive industry wanted it and now we can offer it. That's right 2 days and certified!!!!
Our classes this week at Guppy Gulch are filled but call for details for our next session!!

Maryland's First and Most Professional Dive Center. Leading the way!!!

Yes, a scuba diver certification can be done via online academics and a long day completing pool sessions.Only 2 training dives though,so that gives the consumer a limited "scuba diver certification". Not a full ow certification. That certainly may be what todays instant gratification consumer may want.
I am fairly certain that a full OW course may be accomplished this way also by completing module 1-2-3 confined water, then later in the day ow training dives 1 and 2..next day complete confined water 4-5 and do the last 2 ow training dives..I do not recommend it for most of the general population, but for someone who completes all online academics and is a very comfortable person in the water to begin with then it is indeed possible.Class size should be very small with only 1 or 2 students.

I have been in this business for 40 years and teaching for 36 so I think I have the system under control. You are right this course is not for everyone, however to conform with all the competition and the industry instant gratification certification concept we now are offering this type of program.
My choice has always been a complete program to full open water certification and still will be, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Same here.Teaching 38 years..We have been considering changing what we do here also, and offer a "scuba diver" certification rather than full ow due to consumer demand.Seems instant gratification is what they want. Most come to the facility with airline ticket in hand and want to be able to dive on their vacation with a DM leading them..Few actually dive locally anymore. Just yesterday had 2 people call about starting a class this weekend and they called it 'express weekend" because they are leaving for Grand Cayman on the 23rd of this month.Advised them that we do not have a weekend class scheduled for this weekend,we did last week.Next weekend schedule starts on July 23rd.
Advised them that to meet their needs they would have to go with a private class .Not only they want instant gratification, they want it with very short notice. Not economically viable to run ow course for 2 at our standard rate.If it was a normally scheduled date and only 2 signed up it will be ran but at a loss.We try not to disappoint anyone.

8 years ago I certified PADI and was given the option of the "Scuba Diver" certification but when it was described I was quick to rule it out. I have no idea what the cost or timeframe was back then but it was not what I wanted........I had just finished a resort intro (4 FPW - feet of pool water :D) and knew damn well that I wanted to go for broke.

What percentage of people coming to your shop come in not caring what they can do after that trip.....thus making this quicker certification with the DM requirement of interest? I would have thought that, if the different levels were fully explained to the person and the conditions that go along with them, few people would be interested in the Scuba Diver Certification over the Open Water certification. Perhaps this is why I was not responsible for developing the market starategy for PADI :D.

Can you buy air with the "scuba diver" certification?

When it was explained to me 8 years ago, you could not. At least not on it's own. It was said that no shop would give me air unless I was taking one of their DM+'s. I cannot say what it is today though.
