Hi,
I am considering taking a nitrox course but I take a daily dose of fluticasone propionate (branded as flixonase) for perennial rhinitis.
I know that sudafed increases the risk of oxygen toxicity and I was wondering if the fluticasone propionate has the same effect.

thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,

The active ingredient in some, but not all, formulations of Sudafed is pseudoephedrine, a drug classed as a sympathomimetic. Sympathomimetics are chemicals that excite the central nervous system and heart, constrict blood vessels and inhibit the production of histamine. They are often quite effective in controlling and treating certain types of allergic conditions involving the respiratory system.

While it has been hypothesized that drugs containing sympathomimetics may predispose to ox-tox, this has not been scientifically demonstrated.

The active ingredient in Flixonase Allergy Nasal Spray is fluticasone propionate, a synthetic steroid and not a sympathomimetic. As with any medication, it has certain possible side effects and these must be monitored. However, there is noting about the chemical nature of this compound that raises any red flags as far as ox-tox is concerned.
