I recently bought an Oxycheq st/stl travel backplate with adjustable harness and 30lb mach V signature wing, which I'm very happy with (Thanks Scuba Toys)

I've spent a bit of time putting it together and have all the straps adjusted fitting nice and snug.

My question is.... how short do you trim the excess lengths of webbing bearing in mind it's adjusted for the max wet suit thickness I'm likely to use in the next few years and don't see the need to lengthen any of the straps by any considerable ammount? And what's the best method for cutting and sealing the ends of the webbing straps to stop them from fraying? As it is at the moment I have lots of loose flappy bits that I want to get rid of.

How much length do you typically leave?

I have the exact setup but with a stainless steel medium plate.
I took a sharp knife and heated it up with a propane torch. It cut and sealed in one simple stoke.

I leave enough length to easily attach the buckle on the left waist webbing and enough on the rightside so it feeds through the buckle and halfway to my left hip.
Tuck the excess from the right side under your crotch strap and knife harness so it doesn't hang/flop about and you're set
