Again my comment was not for all but it was for most. There are hacks in all lines of work. You are an exception to the "average" diver. I think people should get an education on the workings of their own equipment so they understand the importance of what work needs to be done during a service as well as how to keep it in great condition in-between services. Not everyone is lucky enough to be near a well established shop that has proven itself over the years. Many shops come & go or are the only game around and people have to deal with it. They should personally get to know the people that are working on their equipment ask questions. These forums can be very useful to new folks if for nothing else but to learn the pitfalls. I have a repair bench in my basement for my own gear that most shops would dream of having. I started out as you wanting to be able to work on my own gear. I got involved with a shop 15yrs ago, took the courses & updates and became a tech. I made my reputation and the rest is history. If you enjoy doing regs you should get involved with a shop. It is hard to find someone to want do tech work let alone be good at it. Shop discounts are great and you create another shop people can come to rely on.RiverRat:I agree most divers (recreational anyway) have neither the skill nor desire to service their own regs, but what do you mean "most people would do a better job on their buddys gear, than on their own"? When I work on my own gear I strive for nothing less than perfection, and would expect the same from a hired tech.
I have seen in many lines of work the person that does not know enough about a particular job say "that is expensive, do I really need to change/fix it"? from houses to cars to scuba repairs. Most folks, because they do not always understand the problem or need, chose to take the cheap way out and go with, it looks OK to me, why should I spend the money?
OK, so if there ARE that many hacks out there, why would I hire someone and PAY them to make my life miserable and possibly kill me? No wonder I'm paranoid about someone servicing my regs. No thanks, I have the parts, the schematics, a training CD, the tools and the desire to live..........
