I've got 18 logged dives... but they are all fresh water.

I'm working on the book study courses for ssi aow right now... deep diving, nitrox, navigation and night/low vis.

I was talking with my instrucor about where to do the advanced open water check out dives since the local Ocean City dives are all booked up for the season through his store.

He said we can do it at Hatteras (sp?? sorry) if you like. My father lives about 2 hours away from there... so it would be perfect for us. He is only willing to do this due to the fact he likes diving there... and he's pretty sure he can find a couple people to fill th 6 pack boat.

Is this a good idea? I've heard Hatteras can be a bit rough on a new diver etc.

Thoughts?

Like all Atlantic Ocean dive sites, the conditions are hit-or-miss depending on the weather. Hatteras is not as cold and dark as the OC waters. This time of year, a 3-mill full suit should be fine out there. If you get good weather, you can have very good vis and fairly easy dives. You'll see great stuff there! Sharks, Grouper, Amberjack, 'cuda, etc.
Stay close to your instructor or buddy, pay attention to the dive briefing, mind your pressure gauge, and you should be fine.

Good luck!

NC can't be much worse than OC, MD. I've fished both and dove both. I don't know why this wouldn't be appealing if all else is the same.
