My 15 year old son and his mom are traveling to the Los Angeles area this July. As a new diver he is looking at exploring going out on a charter for a couple of dives.

I am looking for some suggestions from anyone who may be familiar with diving out of the LA area. I don't think diving from a Catalina based operation is an option.

I have already made all this contingent on me feeling comfortable enough with his diving skills to allow him to dive with an insta-buddy. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go along.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Here's a place to start. Scuba Diving - Ocean Adventures Dive Co. Los Angeles, Venice CA

Talk to Steve, Joseph or Andy.

I don't think anyone would be comfortable diving with a 15 year old first off & second I don't think he'd be aloud to go on a dive boat w/o an adult with him. But here's a place to check: California Dive Boats : The Official Page

He could still easily rent his equipment and take it to catalina via the express ($60 pp). There, on the dock, he can load his gear on a truck for $8 and they'll ferry it to and from Casino Point underwater park. There's also air fills available at that location for $6 each. However, that's diving on your own. If you're not going, probably not an option.

I agree that his diving on his own is a bit risky. How many dives has he logged? Why can't you go with? I assume mom isn't certified? You might be able to hire a divemaster for the day, right? I'm relatively new, too. Even if I had 1000 dives, I wouldn't take out a stranger's child. Good luck, though. Hope your trip goes well.

Coachrenz,
This is tough. Coming from WA we know he will have cold water dive experience. How many dives does he now have and how many to you anticipate him having before he comes? It would be good if someone would volunteer to be a dive buddy that you were comfortable with who had a few dives under their belt. Diving with a 15 year old though will be hard to find a buddy.

The dive operations out of Ventura operate on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and would be less crowded boats. The LA area boats operate mostly on weekends only and are often full.

You could always hire a dive pro to take your son diving and not have to worry about insta-buddies. PM me if you are interested.
