Hola,

This Saturday we were out diving of the Coast of Honduras in the Bay of Cortes. Specifically in La Picuda (short for Barracuda). We were four divers....instructor and student and myself and another diver who was an assistant instructor.

I have dived the site in many occasions and I was asked to lead the assistant instructor out to the wall(his first time diving La Picuda). I determined a dive profile, reviewed hand signals, etc. We planned a 70 foot max depth for 15 minutes then gradually work our way back to the boat that was anchored at 35 feet. Everything was ready and visibility, water and dive site looked great..

As we jumped into the water the "Assistant" was having trouble with his bouyancy...he mentioned that it was a brand new BCD and after a couple of minutes added 4 more pounds to his gear. Everything looked good so we started diving...

From the beginning he was up and down....diving down to 90-100 feet then coming up to 70 - 75....he constantly pushed ahead of me....and I remember asking him once to keep a level depth several times.

At almost 25 minutes I checked my air and I was close to half a tank....I had kept very calmed and I figured he should have less than half a tank....I asked him how much air he had and he could not communicate back to me...he just pointed to his gauge and gave me an OK signed......

He was ahead of me at this point and I told him I was at Half a Tank and that we were turning around. He understood and we headed back towards the boat. Here he continued to dive all over the place.

At almost 37 minutes into the dive and at a depth of 40 feet I suddenly feel a pull in my fins...I turn around and he gives me the Out of Air signal as he is rushing to the surface.....visibility was great and I was able to follow his EXODUS to the surface from 40-35 feet.

As he reached the surface I am now at 20 feet he gives me the OK sign again and starts swimming to the boat. I decide to follow him at 15 feet to complete my Safety Stop.

After my safety stop I surface next to him and we climb the boat.

As we are taking our gear off he starts bragging that he has over 500 logged dives and that he is an assistant instructor. To me, he was nothing but a careless and dangerous diver.

My concern is that he is working on becoming an instructor...what is he going to teach his students if he does not follow any type of standard diving rules? I am almost tempted to say his name but I do not think it is allowed...He does work in a dive operation in Costa Rica.

Semita, Goes to show that credentials don't always make the diver! If this person is going to work for the same operation as you, you might consider having a talk with the owner about your concerns. You might also consider giving this person a few more observations before making a final judgement on his skills and abilities.
Reads like you are a skilled diver and maybe this person could learn from your example if his ego doesn't get in the way.

Could you talk to the Instructor he's assisting? You sure wouldn't want any of your friends or family training under this guy if that's his normal practice. We can all have on and off days. Maybe it was a VERY bad "off" day.

I don't think I will see him again as he was passing through. He is on his way to the Bay islands to take his Instructor Course....I hope there are enough filters "in the system" to catch this.....Honestly.....I would not want anyone to receive a course with this guy...

He is planning to work in Costa Rica.....so please be careful. The only other thing I can think of is saying his name and nationality but It doesn't feel right.

Like I said....I hope the "system" catches him.

Let's all hope so!

Well you did the right thing by remaining calm...you never know what can happen. But I am curious, if HE gave you the OOA why did he swim up instead of getting your Octo? Does not make any sence as to an OOA situation. You would NORMALY donate your Octo or he would have grab your Air source.

Are you sure he was not just pulling a stupid and just joking around or being an idiot?

Frankly I would avoid all diving with that individual. if he gets his instructor rating...hope he changes his attitude..ANd he bragged about his diving....did you see his card...I would contact the certifiing agency and make a formal complaint. If only because you feel he was a danger to himself and future students alike

Haha, crazy dewd....old school diving.

Did you ever see any 'proof' of his official rating, ie asst. instructor???...You might have been looking @ someone who was this so called asst. instructor only in his mind ie he might have been flat-out lying to you...He'll be 'caught' just hopefully it's before someone gets hurt(himself included).......I would get his name & do some talking to his agency.........

Dear Tony Montana,

He gave me the Ok sign when I reached the half tank and when I was asking for his reading on air. We turned around and about 10 minutes later he pulled on my fin and dashed to the surface. He did not remain calm, he did not attempt to share my air (I had little lees than half a tank), he gave me the out of air on his way to the top.

this guy was the worst....!!!

Call it as I read it..makes no sence as to an OOA...No saftey stop? he was not whom he said he was...just a big mouth with no skills..and as you stated..he was the worse...Would have gotten a snorkle beating from me.

And Whom is Tony Montana???

and if he signaled you as to an OOA..did you offer your REG and he just ignored you as he bolted to the surface?

Where I come from...you just do not do the OOA and get away with it...Where is my snorkel...:D
