Well I was on a dive trip a couple of weeks ago with a varied group from basic to advanced (first time I'd dived with them) and there was some stress caused by one of the divers openly stating that they refused to dive with "nails". Actually this diver was speaking Portuguese so the word was "prego" which translates to "nail".

The term derives from the fact that bad divers have poor buoyancy control and end up descending so fast without control that they get stuck in the seabed when they hit it - ie nailed to the floor.

From the second day on we got split into 2 boats, one for the "nails" and one for the "non-nails". This became a standing joke for the rest of the week but a couple of very experienced divers (one cave qualified) took it badly and insisted on diving from the "nails" boat in solidarity as a protest against the diver that made the original declaration.

Anyone else come across other terms?

In Newfoundland I heard a term something like "nim-nuck" used to refer to incompetent divers.

Around here we call them "Moderators" :D :D :D

But really, derogatory words such as stroke, nail, noob, snorkle dork and the such have no place on a dive boat. They are usually indicative of someone who is NOT comfortable with their own diving and feel the need to pull others down in order to make themselves look better.

This should be good

It's a blockage of blood flow to the brain, sometimes cause by an actual block in the blood vessel, sometimes by a rupture of the blood vessel.

I wasn't aware that noob was meant to be derogatory. Around here it simply signifies someone who's new to diving. I've never heard it used in a way that was intended to be demeaning ...

I thought that was a CVA(cerebral vascular accident.)
