Anybody else find themselves using diving as an excuse to get away from home?

Kind of sucks. I know I'm doing it, and I don't want to start associating it with the unpleasantness.

Did it once...it was out of impulse. Stress was getting to me so i just went to my LDS and signed up for a weekend trip.

Informed my parents and friends only on the day of departure. Out of comms range and just pure diving and relaxing.

I agree with you that it sucks...i dont want diving to be used this way.

It would be rather difficult to do so for me... since my girlfriend dives too :D

Seriously...in my opinion I would try to work out the causes of you wanting to get away from home (one way or the other) instead of keep doing this. Like you already stated... in the end you'll be associating diving (once a positive thing in your live) with negative thoughts (getting away from home).

I use my love of diving as a reason to keep fit. Sometimes that's at home, sometimes that's at the local health and community centre.

My original attraction to diving was brought about by another hobby - - marine aquariums. I had gotten out of the service in 1971 and relocated to Florida. Got this crazy idea to build a large (250 gallon) marine aquarium from scratch and got a friend of mine to take me out into the gulf stream to harvest enough ocean water to fill it.

I had designed and built the entire set-up myself, including the filtration system so (all things being relative) I was able to keep the cost somewhat under control. But then came the really expensive part ...buying fish.

Took up SCUBA mainly as a means to collect fish and stock my aquarium, since snorkeling really wasn't practical for that purpose. Ended up with one of the best (IMHO) aquariums I have ever seen to date. As time went by though my interest in maintaining a tank that large wained and I ended up selling the entire kitandkaboodle. That was the point at which transitioned from aquarist to "very" amateur u/w photographer ...and that has remained my primary attraction to diving to this day.

As an excuse to get away from my home? Nope.

Now using it as an excuse to get away from my JOB...that's another story altogether!

P.S. Not really true. I enjoy my work (professional educator) and I use diving in a variety of ways to teach a variety of concepts to my students. If I should ever "skip out" to go dive, you can bet that I'll try to rationalize it by bringing something useful back into the classroom!

I would guess that you have a lot of company in that area with golfers. I know a few that golf to get away from home. It gives them an excuse and they enjoy themselves, to boot.

It's an excellent way to see different places. There are a whole bunch of little isolated fishing towns between here and Alaska and diving is a great excuse to go see them, as well as other local spots. Why else would you be in a boat way off the coast in the middle of nowhere? Maybe on a tour, but tours are inherently lame, while diving has you together with other out-going people.
