The danger from mercury, as I understand it, is food chain dependant. Small organisms containing mercury are eaten by small fish and the mercury from their diet builds up in their fatty tissues. These small fish are eaten by larger fish and the mercury from the smaller fish is icorporated into thier fatty tissues and so on. All of this build-up of mercury in the fish is still extremely tiny. 0.1 part per million to quote the article. The mercury in the water itself (if there actually IS any in the water) isn't present in quantities that can be economically measured with any degree of accuracy. While mercury can pass through human skin, it is not likely that you could get a harmful amount from the water, if indeed there is any in the water.
I'll go ahead and dive in Orchard Lake, and just refrain from eating a school of fish while I'm down there.
