Liking to try different things leads me on these quests, I’m moving up on 52 years as a diver and let me tell you young wiper snappers that you do not know how lucky you are in todays wealth of good options for dive gear available to you today, things like regulators have made incremental improvements in the last 50 years and have become cheaper when comparing a $ in 1971 to a # in 2022/23, lights are one of the areas that have had monumental improvements from power supply to available light. I had, before tossing it in the trash last year an 8 D cell dive light, now days for a fraction of the $ that beast cost you can buy a LED tiny light with a common rechargeable battery that will put out massively more light, whiter light and brighter light that was unheard of in those days.

this leads to todays trial light, usually I just buy stuff to try,in this case Orcs reimbursed my purchase of the D550 but this won’t influence my opinion, I’m cheap but not that cheap.

right now is undergoing in sink testing for burn time, usually I do this in my pool but it’s to F’n cold outside for that

I did some output testing yesterday, using one of the two supplied batteries, no charging first, I compared it to some other reasonable priced lights using my pump house as a target, it’s about 75 yards out from the house, here it is

for a 1000 lumen rated light it’s very bright and looks to outperform those two higher rated lights.

the D550 comes with a tail mounted switch, I have some extensive experience with this switch type in a DGX wide beam light I’ve had a long time, I used that as a video light and general dive light diving Truk a few years ago, took it to 183 feet with no issues, this is my favorite switch position since it’s nearly impossible to accidentally turn it on.
in the sink with the DGX, it looks to be the same base light assembly but with a different beam pattern

it turned itself mostly off at 3v, tossed both batteries on the charger and today since the dive plan fell through, I do a full charge down test

so far a very promising very compact light.
will follow up with on high run time and hopefully in the next few days so ocean testing.

Great Review! We have been selling the D550 light for a few years now and have had very good feedback from customers.

I have a couple of the D550’s, they’re good lights. I prefer the D530 as it’s a couple hundred lumens brighter. Can’t go wrong with either though.

I have about 40 dives with this light since November (not all was it turned on) and it is a solid light. I always get more than 2.5 hours on high (as stated by Orcatorch) but often the lower setting is plenty for diving many hours. I have found the need to secure it in the soft goodman handle when used though or chance dropping it somewhere.

I have a pair of these and they work great, until they don't work

So if you’re negligent stuff doesn’t work as well or at all as intended? That what you’re saying?
Basically. I don't have personal experience with the OrcaTorch. I have only heard good things about it, never a bad thing. I should have added a smart arse emoji, as I was making fun of the comment you were responding to. That comment came from a guy who joined my team at work and shared stories how a former co-worker complained about his car was no longer working when he had just run out of gas.

I try to take good care of my stuff, and in general it lasts. I have ScubaPro backup lights for many years now, and still going strong. I wish I only had that same build quality in my $1400 paperweight the Halcyon Handheld Focus 1.

Now everything fails eventually, but it should be a very, very long time when it does. If there is a failure, then there is a customer service question. Do they make it right? Given how aggressive OrcaTorch is on social media, they have to be quite aware of the accolades Shearwater receives for its excellent customer service. I would expect that OrcaTorch would emulate this at the best of their abilities. If I was in the market for a light, I would give them a try based upon what I've read so far.

I will say, I will never buy a new Halcyon light again. I may be an outlier, but my customer service lesson was quite poor with them.

And I would give OrcaTorch a try unless I see failure rate issues AND the company not making it right. So far I haven't read any such stories.
