Orca encounters; we recently had a pod of Orcas take a Grey Whale calf in Monterey bay. It was caught on film and reported on local the local news. I learned about it from Bay Area Diving another board. Then this Orca encounter was posted by Marc S. on that board. Pretty amazing stuff. I'd like to read into the whale's behavior but I know that like humans, looks can be deceiving. A picture is worth a 1000 words and probably just as many stories.

why is that kid looking all upset and hurt in the photo? IMO he's totally lucky - how many people in the world have come face to face with a live killer whale who gave them a little bash before swimming away. What a lucky guy!

As for the gray whale, Transient packs of Orcas will follow migrating gray wales and their calves. They find an isolated mother and chase her leisurely until the calf wears out. Then they attack. The mother will then try and fend them off, but they end up separating the two and they drown the calf. Then it's dinner time. Rent the Blue planet series, they follow a hunt and go over it. It's pretty interesting.

That entire series is awesome. Unfortunately it makes me do stupid things ... like booking last minute trips to the Carribean and making visa very happy.
