Hello All,

My boss has a brother-in-law visiting at the end of December into January (29th to 2nd) and he would like to get a dive or two in around catalina. But he also was looking to rent a dry suit, does anyone in the area rent them?

Also are there any boats going out at that time? Most seem to be shut down for the holidays.

Thanks

In the OC you can always go to Sport Challet (lots of locations). I also think Pacific Wilderness can help (they are in Orange). Give Roger a call and see if he can help (Welcome to Pacific Wilderness Online!). I first certfied off Catalina in February and March. The water was cold but my 7mm suit and lots of :coffee: on the SI got the job done. But then, I had another problem :shocked2: that I hand't given any thought about.

I like Island Time for a quick day of diving off Catalina. No frills, no lunch or hot coffee but they get there quick and there is plenty of room on the boat. Nice thing is that I get done and home early enough in the afternoon that I don't get much heat from the wife. Looks like they are out there every weekend through the end of the year. Thanks for the info I will pass it along.

I am going to try Laguna tomorrow in a 7mm to see if I will be brave enough to dive early January.

For boats running, check out CA Diving News website. They have a search engine to sort charters by date(s), trip length, destination, etc.

Diving Laguna may not be the best test of whether or not you can deal with it....that is, unless you plan on diving a similar profile out at Catalina. I notice when I'm fairly shallow (as most of Laguna is), diving in a 7mm for an hour is totally doable. But when I start getting deeper, my suit compresses more and more, and I start getting uncomfortable quickly. That said, I was diving wet until six dives ago, and many of those dives were in the 80-100 foot range. It's doable, but if you're going deep and/or doing multiple dives in the day, a drysuit may be the more comfortable way to go (especially if anyone in your group is a big wussy like me!).

The only three SC's that rent DS's are Huntington Beach, Marina del Rey and West Hills.

That's what they told me last week.

You are correct!

But since this is my first winter diving I don't really know what to expect. And since I have not been diving in a few weeks it sounds like a good excuse to get wet. But I would really like to get a boat trip in by the end of the year I just keep thinking :cold: it will be cold.....
