I recently switched to a Sherwood Avid BCD. The most comfortable BCD I've used so far and I get good trim with it.
Also recently switched to their Triton Fin and again I'm happy with it. Definitely give me better thrust with less fatigue than the Cressi I had.
Have the Oasis for years. Recommend it.

When I first started out diving, my LDS sold primarily Sherwood products and as a beginner, they met my needs, but I soon found that their entry level products are very entry level and I soon replaced them.

Keep in mind that these comments relate to their products from 15-20 years ago and not their current line-up and so are offered only as general advice.

My first BCD was a Sherwood Cayman. It was a jacket style and while it did the job, I soon found that I preferred the horizontal orientation of a back inflate more than the tendency of a jacket to orient me vertically. I soon replaced it.

My first reg was a Sherwood Brut. This reg was 'bullet proof'. The big draw-back was that at the end of a dive, when there was less air in the tank, I personally found it hard to breathe.

I replaced my Brut with a Maximus. I have to admit that I really liked this reg. It was comfortable and it breathed well. The only issue that I had with it was that it was designed to have a slow trickle of bubbles coming out of the 1st stage (over-pressured) and after almost every dive, someone would come up to me to warn me that my 1st stage was leaking (it wasn't).

My general impressions are similar to those that have already been voiced. Sherwood makes (markets) a solid middle of the road product that while no frills, should perform reliably for years.

As your skill increases, and you find you prefer one style of diving over another, you will likely find that what serves you well as you enter this sport may not be the best option in the long term and you will eventually start tailoring your gear to the type of diving that you do. This means that whatever you get as a beginner, will likely be a short to medium term investment.

I would not hesitate to say that Sherwood makes (markets) a product that will easily meet your current needs. Only you will (someday) know how or if they will meet your long term needs.

Understand that I have nowhere the experience with different brands that most on here do so I am only commenting on my perception of performance of the gear I have.

The wife and I both have Shadow BC's and Sherwood Oasis regs and octos and have had zero problem out of any of them. I feel certain that there is gear that better suits other diving than we have been doing but for what we do (Gulf diving and Caribbean) this gear has served us fine.

I dove with Kighthawk for years in New England and the Caribbean. Solid BC that performs well in all conditions.

Depends where you are. If you cannot get your regulator serviced, it is worthless. In the USA, you can often ship your regulator relatively cheaply to get serviced .
Same with me. My first reg set was a Sherwood Maximus. Worked well down to 4C water, no issues. When my LDS told me they'd have problems sourcing service kits for Sherwoods, I found a decently priced used Apeks XTX reg set. Now, my Sherwood is out of service and collecting dust in my basement.

Sherwood regulators are very solid regulators, aren't the top of the line but very solid. If I were stuck on an Island and I can only have one or two regulators, they will be Atomic, as first choice, and Sherwood as second choice.
Given that Apeks (typically XTX40s and/or XTX50s) may be the most popular brand among hard-core divers in my part of the world, I'm rather partial to that brand. I don't claim to be an expert, but if one brand is really, really popular among the aficionados, I'm going to listen to them.

i won't comment on the Sherwood avid bc here but if you research some comments in the Sherwood section of scuba board you'll find some candid explanations..
