Im currently finishing my rescue course. I have been renting so that i could try different types of gear and then decide. I still have no idea. I think that i should just go with the most comfortable set up within my budget... is that the right direction? I like so far wither the Sherwood Avid, or the Seaquest Pro QD. Both jackets as i have never done a dive with a back inflate... one more thing, opinions on an octopus vs. a secondary attached to the inflator such as a Gemini? Thanks

Welcome to Scubaboard.
I bought a SeaQuest Black Diamond with AIR II and wish now that I hadn't as I upgraded to a back plate and wings. If you have the opportunity to try this set-up I think it would be a good idea. If you do go with a more traditional BCD, I would go with a weight integrated back inflate, I have found this type of BC to have better trim characteristics and less likely to ride up. I also would go for a more traditional octopus as the inflater integrated regulators just don't offer the flexibility and ease of use of the octopus.

Cheers.

There are about as many different opinions on gear as there are divers. It is a good suggestion to try a BP/W if you haven't already. I don't prefer them myself, and use a soft harness and wing instead. Choose what you feel most comfortable in... but check any reviews you can find on the product(s) first.

Think about your rescue class, and an OOA situation, now think about controlling bouyancy with the same device you are breathing from. Could you do it? Many divers can while some (me included) think that it is too much task loading. NOTE: my opinion doesn't count. Can YOU do it?

In general jacket BCs and integrated octos have more cons than pros.

The "most comfortable" setup is always the most comfortable setup you had a chance to try, therefore you are likely to miss more optimal setups. Do your best to try a backplate and wing, as well as a more traditional back-inflate BC. About the only downside to a BP&W is the lack of pockets, but that can be rectified by using a thigh-pocket. The simplicity and versitality is a huge plus.

Save your money when buying computers and regulators. It's very easy to overspend and very difficult to go wrong with cheaper equipment here.

And do yourself a favor and get this: 65" Rubber Weight Belt with Wire Buckle from LeisurePro.com - best purchase I've made.
