When diving in Spain or their territories you have to have dive insurance. You can either show your own insurance or take it out at the dive center. The insurance is only valid for your certified depth.
When holidaying outside the UK it is normal to take out holiday insurance, this limits the depth to your certified depth. If you do not have insurance, or go outside your policy limits you can have very high medical and rescue bills. There have been cases where uninsured divers have had to pay over £7000 for a helicopter flight and decompression chamber treatment. Some uninsured moped / scooter riders families have had to pay up to £40,000 for medical bills and repatriation medical flights.
