18 meters (20 yards) / 60 feet is the limit. But you may end up doing your dives at 40 feet.

I suspect, being based in Newport, that your dive school will use the NDAC in Chepstow.

There is a map here of the NDAC diving area.

The depth does change during the year, as the water level rises and falls. Theoretically, the maximum depth for you would be 16m, (20m being the maximum allowed for a PADI OW diver), this being the deepest section within your qualification.

Also, they won't take you directly to 16m (20m). The depth is increased progressively during your open water dives. Initially, you will probably start on the training platform, which means a theoretical depth of 6m.
If you are in anyway nervous about this, let your instructor know, and they will ensure a progressive increase in depth, within your comfort level.

My experience from long ago:
first day, two dives, around 25-30', near an old unused pipeline from shore.
Second day, on a wreck (off of Destin FL) with the sand at 59' and top of this sunk towboat at about 45'.

(Best wishes. And please don't ask how deep you are "allowed" to dive once certified, it will just start a debate over whether it's 60', 130', or somewhere in between, who knows, etc..)

;-)

In my OW course I went (& DMd OW courses to) about 20 feet. We have a cement block on the bottom (where else?) at about that depth--tide into consideration and tie a buoy to it. This is used for all skills including CESA. On the "we're done" dive (still "mini-dive"?) DMs are instructed not to take students below 30-35 feet.

My OW cert dive was about 80', as was my "free first dive".

The limit for OW once qualified is 18 m or 60 ft. During training it probably depends on the dive centers insurance. For many the insurance limits training dives to 12 m. However training can be said to be complete after 20 minutes of your final dive. Most training takes place at 2 to 7 m
