Iam just about to complete my cw dives and move to the open water part what are the open water skills needed for padi?

Your instructor should be covering this with you, if he/she isn't, you should probably ask.

You should not be doing anyhting in open water you did not at least simulate in the pool.
After you finish, remember that the card they give you is really a "learner's permit". To continue your education you have to dive, dive dive. Hopfully with some more experianced buddies. Join a local club or maybe even two of them.

If you felt comfortable with your pool work, you'll do fine. Where are you doing your checkout dives? Will you need a wetsuit?

I went through PADI for my cert, too. The only difference in the open water cert was the relaxing swim to the dive site from the shore (very easy w/BCD and fins) and the need for a 7 mm wetsuit / more weight. I live in Pennsylvania and did my cert dives in the beginning of May, hence the need for the suit.

Best wishes / good luck / happy diving!

look in your blue training log book..It is all listed in order that you will do it..have you kept up your log during the course ? should have listed dates of acad presentations, quiz, exam , confined water etc..did instr sign off on it?

I'm not certified yet, but have taken two OW courses (one refresher last month). Neither course had us practice compass navigation. I'm not sure if the instructors spring that on you while doing the cert dives or not? Maybe somebody else can answer that question.

Good luck on your dives! :)

We practiced in the parking lot at the open water dive site and then at depth from platform and then back.one of the dive masters was right there with me so I could watch the compass.I ended up maybe 5 feet from were I started, not to bad,lot of fun.
the vis was about 5-10 ft where we did our open water dives, not to fun :( ,but once we got in the water in Cozumel it was like WOW, 100+ vis.. Too cool.

It's very basic and should only take a couple of minutes to explain, it won't be complicated or difficult, nothing will.
