It's the law, a mod has to say they are a mod when you ask them...

Many have tried,none have succeeded....

**that is not a challenge**

in the 5 years I have been fairly active on SB I have seen less then a hand full of posts that I thought deserved banning.
Which shows you how effective our 'report/moderate' system works. We don't do preemptive moderating or banning. Once a user reports a post, the mods get a working thread in the back room. Quite often it's so cut and dried that the first mod who sees it, simply resolves it. There are times though, when there is quite a bit of discussion in the back room. Like a referee, this can be seen as our instant replay. During this time of discussion, past history, perceived intent and the severity of the foul(s) are hashed out and a response is formulated. FWIW, probably over half the time, we advise the reporting entity to lighten up or use the ignore function. Not every report results in action.

But the process doesn't start without the first report. Since we have a global team, many of the problematic posts are gone before you get to see them. This system has evolved over the sixteen years of our existence, and it appears to work well. I take the comments like the one I quoted as a glowing testimonial of how well it does work. It's best when only the perpetrator knows there's been a foul. Well, the perpetrator and the first person to report them. You can't ask for better.

Attention chickens:
The unspoken rule: anyone who asks to be a moderator, will never be one. There has been only one exception in 16 years.

Like being an elected official, if you want the job, you aren't qualified.

It sounds like the old joke about the British gun licence application. There is only one question: "Do you want to own a gun?" Anyone who replies "yes" is thought to be an unsuitable person to have access to firearms.*

* Inserted for the purposes of relatable humour - not intended to hijack thread or start a vigorous and never ending debate on gun control laws in different countries.

Out of curiosity, do you sit around with the other ex-pat Brits and talk about the crazy Americans and our fascination with guns?
