didn't like the ending .... so many things they could have done to survive ... (1) why didn't the guy use the flash on his camera to signal other boats for help ? Why did they swim on thier backs instead of using their snorkels to try and get somewhere ? (3) back in the 60's we were taught how to take our tank and backpack off and use it to ram sharks in the nose to discourage them

On a side note, I heard that one real possibility is that the divers faked their own death to get out of some financial trouble. Not sure if its true, but it could be done.

Just on the smaller question of sinking into the ocean....I'd probably KEEP my weight belt, and REMOVE my wetsuit, unlike (if I remember correctly...but not willing to pay to see it again!) the woman in the movie, who was able to sink "at will" with a wetsuit & no weight belt. Mind over matter, I guess, ha ha.

Thank you Iruka,

I was quite puzzled when she just sunk with a wetsuit on, having previously ditched her weights.

I`d survive as long as could - I`d hate to think of the few folk who actually quite like me spending years wondering where i was - or having to put up with rumour that I`d fake my death etc etc

the movie was not bad ,but not realy good ether.2 points ,one the dm brief said 30min dive, the couple surface and he looks at watch and says were on time .most people that dive to 60' would be realy low on air after 30min ,so were is the boat if he was on time, that part realy struck me as the group on the boat seems like most part time vaction divers , so there is the possiable that the dm called the dive a few mins early ,I doubt it though. the scene were they see the boat and man does not want to swim ,the movie should have said wich way the currant was taking them ,then his choice would have made sence.as far as swim to bouy marker by then I belive they would not have the strenght to swim .the sharks looked like reef type ,not high on the list of man eaters.the scene were she tied the belt on his leg would have stoped the bleeding ,then the blood would have cloted .as for her sinking with out weight ,my cousin took peak bounyancy with aow and has dropped a lot of weight (he is big 6'3 230lbs )now dives with 12lbs and 3mil,plus 7mil 2 peice in 45 deg water ,he just stayes reel still and just slowy sinks takes a few min's.personaly I would not kill my self ,I belive god has plan and if I am to die then shark will do it ,if I am to live I will be found ,my faith is very strong .just my 2 cents

No suicide for me.

I'll die trying.

All the best, James

The other night 20/20(I think) had a show on these folks. The aussie policeman correctly observed that there are lots of easier and more sure ways to fake death for profit. Especially since it was only because of mistakes by others that this event happened in the first place.

Had the divemaster and Captain been doing their jobs the divers wouldn't have been able to go missing. And that is the key: No matter what actually happened, and we don't know that, had the boat crew been doing their jobs the divers wouldn't have gone missing, and presumably died.

Thanks for everyone else's input into the original question.

Of course this was just a movie. It was based on a real event, but like all movies had a lot of "literary license" built in. Like a lot of movies sharp eyes can catch some editing mistakes, like the female sinking at the end after having ditched her weights earlier.

What would I do? Well I only believe in suicide under two circumstances. First, when in combat when it will most certainly result in accomplishing the overall mission. Second, when in the later stages of a terminal illness. At all other times, to me suicide is Wrong.

Also, Moon Jellyfish don't sting---at least I've never been stung by one, and some places I dove they were so thick, I had to push them out of the way to get to the bottom. Give me a break, they acted like they were being tortured by them. Stupid Movie!!
