Just got a note from my brother who is in Coz right now. He went fishing yesterday and caught an albatross. Yup, it dived for, and caught, his bait. He said it was quite the experience having one angry bird with a 6 foot wing span circling his boat! He managed to reel it in, get it released, and back in the air again. Hope he got some photos!

LOL!
We were doing some deep sea fishing when one of the crew called out... well, I think is was espanol for pelican. They cut the speed and started circling. I think it was so the bait would sink and the big bird would go away.
It was funny but thinking back it made sense.

Just seeing one at Coz would be a rare treat as they don't seem to be native there. Funny in a potentially tragic way. Glad he got it freed ok.

It's a good thing they didn't hang it around his neck.

I'll bet it was a frigate bird.

I'll bet it was a frigate bird.

Frigates, pirates of the sky...

but you think one would be able to distinguish between the 2, wing shapes are very different, fragates being more pointed at the ends. frigates are mostly black, if not all black, males having the red throat pouch and the 'gooney bird' is either mostly white or in the case of the black footed albatross, dark gray,...I spent a year on Midway Island, belive me I know my albatross!!

having said all that, i have never seen one on Coz, but frigates are always present.

My brother is no bird expert so it could well be some other type for sure.

not so fast, he actually does appear to be an expert at bird-fishing, don't sell him short....:)

It was probably a frigate bird. I've never caught one, but we've had them diving after our baits many times when we fish around Cozumel. Boat captains will chase them; they are a pretty good indication of schools of bait fish when they are circling and diving, and the fish we are after are often there as well.
